In the summer of 2022, I embarked on a two-month road trip with my family, covering 28 states, and visiting some of the most famous sights in the country. Taking two months off from your business might sound like a recipe for disaster. But with the right leadership skills and preparation, it’s not only possible—it’s beneficial. The key lies in developing a leadership style that empowers your team to take ownership, make decisions, and keep the momentum going even when you’re not there to steer the ship.

Here are a few leadership skills that I believe are essential:

  1. Delegation and Trust: You can’t be everywhere at once, and you shouldn’t have to be. Trust your team with the responsibilities that matter. Train them well, delegate tasks effectively, and have faith in their ability to carry out the vision.
  2. Effective Communication: Ensure that your team knows your expectations and goals. When clear communication is the norm in your organization while you are there, you would be surprised how little your team needs to reach you when you’re away.
  3. Empowerment: Empower your team to make decisions. When people feel ownership over their work, they are more invested in the outcome. This not only boosts their confidence but also ensures that the business runs smoothly without constant oversight.
  4. Systems and Processes: Have solid systems and processes in place. These serve as the backbone of your business operations, ensuring consistency and efficiency especially when you’re not around.

In the end, the summer of 2022 wasn’t just about exploring America’s natural wonders; it was about proving that with the right leadership approach, your business can thrive even when you’re off the grid. Believe it or not, I see it as a part of my mission to help other leaders take two-month vacations. Here’s to summer, adventure, and thriving businesses!
