As we roll into 2025, I’ve been thinking a lot about the future—not just the big stuff, like leadership trends, but also my own goals for the year. Now, when it comes to goals, I have been accused of being a little bit obsessive. Truth be told, I have forty goals spread out over seven categories. Yep, you read that right.
The seven categories are: Faith, Family, Fitness, Friends, Fun, Financial, and Field (Work). Here are just a few of my goals:
In the area of Field, I’m planning to finish writing my next book and have it ready for publishing. I’ve set milestone goals for that one because, like so many big goals, it’s a process.
In the area of Family, I have challenged myself to create meaningful rites-of-passage for my daughter and son, who are turning 13 and 16, respectively.
And, in the category of Fitness, I plan to achieve a body like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Alright, so that one might be a bit delusional, but a goal is a goal.
In a way, goal setting is sort of like predicting the future. This time of year, we all start reflecting on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. It’s natural to wonder: What’s next? What’s going to define my life in 2025?
When it comes to leadership, I think it’s important to ask the question: What are the trends that will shape leadership in 2025? As a business and leadership coach, I’ve repeatedly seen that it’s possible to recognize patterns, anticipate opportunities (some might call them challenges) and prepare ourselves in advance so we can achieve our biggest goals.
That’s what I endeavor to do in this month’s newsletter, in a broad sense. In 2025, I think we’re going to see a huge demand for leaders with strong “soft skills” like listening and empathy. Why? Because, perhaps more than ever before, people want connection, understanding, and a sense of belonging in their work.
I also think we’re entering an era when taking care of yourself as a leader is just as important as taking care of your team. Mental health, mindset, and self-care will emerge as leadership differentiators.
Finally, I think adaptability in leadership will be crucial. The shifts we are seeing in technology and in the workplace now require leaders who can strategize, anticipate opportunities, and change when necessary.
I hope you are as excited as I am to jump into a new year full of opportunities, challenges, and maybe even a little surprise or two. Let’s work hard and make 2025 awesome! If you need me, check the gym. Even if I can’t out-lift The Rock, I’ll be giving it my best shot.
Here’s to achieving big things in the year ahead!
Tom
